And Eagle went out to sit on top of his house.

He was sitting, looking out way out in the middle of the water.

After a while he said, “Bring me my clothes! Bring them!”

The clothes were given to him and he flew away.

He flew away, and it wasn’t very long, and he returned with a spring salmon.

They set the spring salmon aside, and Raven ate it up.

And Raven decided to copy his brother, so he went and sat on the roof of his house.

He called his children and said, “Oh! Give me my clothes, children, give me my clothes.”

They gave him his clothes, he put them on, and then he left.

He just disappeared and they were wondering what happened to him.

Eagle arrived to where his younger sibling was and sat.

And he said, “Your father is drifting away and he got here, and he’s dead. He’s dead.”

And they went to him and his beak was all broken up.

He had bitten into a rock and had broken his beak.

So they brought him home.

And they got home, and they were all very sad, and they were very unhappy because his younger brother had died.

So [Eagle] went on home.

And it wasn’t long after, and someone appeared.

“Holy cow, the one who died is also the one walking.”

[Eagle says,] “You have returned home?”

“Aa! I have. And I’m going to visit your younger sibling, Seal.”

And it didn’t take very long and the pan was full of the grease dripping from Seal.

And they took the dish and put it in front of Raven.

And Raven turned around and drank the grease all down really fast.

And then he said, “I guess I’d better go home.”
“nem’ lhu nem’.”
[Seal said,] “Go ahead and go.”

And Raven went home.

When he got home, he was sitting around.

The next day, Seal decided to go see her brother.

She returned his visit.

And the children brought the dish over to where they were at.

And Raven decided to heat his hands over the fire.

His hands just blistered up and burst open.

And Seal called out, “Move back, move back.”

so he moved back. And Seal went and warmed her hands, and her hands dripped.

And in no time, the bowl was full of her grease.

Raven drank it all up, finished it,

And Seal went home.

She got home, and she was very sad that her brother’s hands were all burned, blistered, injured.

And the next day, Raven did the same thing.

“Aa! I’m going to go traveling over there.

I’m going to travel far on my journey.”

[He was going visiting], and he knew about Deer, a big deer, over at the point.

So the next day, he left.

And when he arrived there,

And he says, “I have come to see you. I have come to see you.”
“’oo, ’i ch hum’i.”
“Oh, you have come.”
“nu stl’i’ kws nem’ tst kw’i’ nem’ ’u tthu tsitsulh kws xeem tst.”
“I want us to go and climb up the mountain and we’ll cry.”
’aa, suw’ qwals tthu smuyuth, “’uwu te’ p’e’ nu sye’yu kwlh q’ay ’i’ xeem tsun wa’.
Aa, and Deer said, “I have no friend of mine that has died that I should cry for.
nem’ ch p’e’ ’uw’ hay ’ul’ kw’i nem’ ’u tthey’; hay ch p’e’ ’uw’ xeem’ ’uw’ yath.”
You go by yourself, as you are always crying.”
“’aa, ’uwu, ’uwu. ’uwu niis st’e ’u tthey’.
“Oh, no, no. It’s not like that.
nilh kw’us xeem tst p’e’ ’u kwthuw’ sht’e tst ’ul’ p’e’ kwsuw’ t-sas tst ’ul’ nilh ’ul’ ’un’sh xaamuthut.
We’ll just go up there and cry in self-pity, about how we have been very pitiful.

And so they started climbing up the mountain,

It was very high up where he was pointing. And (Deer) was saying “It’s too high. It’s too far up.”
“’a ’uwu, m’i xwte’ ’u tu’inulh. xwum tse’ ’ul’ kw’us tus.”
[And Raven was saying,] “No, walk this way. It’s easy this way, and it won’t take long.”
suw’ huye’s tthuw’nilh suw’ tus ’u tthey’ ’ii’wustus suw’ hwu ’a’mut-s.
And they walked there. And then, arriving there, he said “This is the place.” And he sat down.
suw’ qwulmutewut tthu smuyuth, “st’e ch ’u tu’i ’uw’ xeemuhw, qp’as ch.
He told Deer, “You cry like this with your head down.
ni’ tse’ kwu’elh tth’eq’um’ tthu ’un’ shqa’us hunum’ ’u tnanulh tl’itl’up.
Your tears will drop and go way down the mountain.
nilh ’uw’ ha’us tse’ ’uw’ ni’ ’ul’ tthu lhu’eelhuq’ tumuhw ’i’ lhulq tst ’u tthu shqa’us tst.”
If we go to the lowest part of the land, we will flood it.”
sis ’uw’ xeem’ tthu smuyuth, xeem’ tl’lim’ ’uw’ xamuthut.
Deer started crying, crying in self-pity.
ni’ wulh stitum’ xeem’ suw’ thxutewut, sis ’uw’ hilum ’u tthu tsitsulh slukwulhnulh.
He started crying real hard, and Raven pushed him and he fell down the cliff.
suw’ yulhi’a’qwt tthuw’nilh spaal’ kws yu xut’us “yaxwqq, ya,’a,’a.”
And Raven followed, making a sound. “Rrrrrr ... rrrr .... rrr.”
ni tiqw’ tthu smuyuth ’u tthu tl’itl’up ’i’ ni’ q’ay.
And when Deer landed at the bottom, he died.
’i’ wulh tus tthuw’nilh spaal’ suw’ lhuyxt-s, muq’utum tthu smuyuth ni’ hwu sq’aq’i’.
When Raven arrived, he ate the dead Deer up.

He ate up the whole thing, all of Deer.

And then he decided to go home, and he started travelling home.

When he got home, he told his family,

“I don’t feel so good; my stomach is hurting so badly.

Go and call your auntie slug. Go and call her.”

Slug was a shaman.

When the children got to slug, they told her,

He’s sick. He wants you to cure him.”

[So Slug said,] “Come on, let’s go. I’ll follow. Let’s go.”

And when Slug got there, she said to him,“Oh, you crazy fool.”

And Raven said “Yi-i-ix ! Yi-i-ix! Don’t say anything.”

And Slug sat down.

And he said, “I want you to feel my stomach.”

So slug went over there, and when she was feeling it.

she could feel the deer horns in his stomach.

“What’s inside your belly is deer horn,” [said slug.]
“yix, yixyi, ts’ehwul’, ts’ehwul’.
“Yi-i-ix, yi-i-ix. Shut up.

That’s why I’m suffering, because you are always saying things like that.”

So slug just left, and didn’t cure him. She just went home.

He decided he was going to go visit Thrush.

And so he left to go and visit his other sister, Thrush.

He went walking to go for a visit, and it was a long way. He had a long walk.

When he arrived there, he went in, and his sister said,
“’imush ’ewulh ’imush. ’umut ch nem’ ’u tuni’.”
“Come in, come in. Sit over there.”
suw’ ’umut-s ’uw’ spaal’ uhw. suw’ qwals thu s-hwut,
Raven went and sat over there where he was told to, and Thrush called to her children,
“nem’ kwunutee’ kwthu la’thun.
“Go and get the dish.
nilhs ch kwthu thi la’thun m’i kwunutuhw, me’mun’u, m’i ch ’ewustuhw ’u tthu’i nu shhw’i.
Go and get that large dish, children, and bring it over here.
’aa, nem’ ch nemustuhw ’u kwu’i s’e’tl’q.”
Okay, take it outside.”
suw’ kwuyxthut tthu stl’ul’iqulh ’i’ ni’ ’utl’qtum tthu thi la’thun.
So the children went and got the large dish, and they brought the large dish outside.

The children came and told their mother,

“The dish is ready where you told us to put it .”

“Okay, good.”

And Thrush chanted:

They returned and told their mother, “It’s full of salmonberries.

“Go and get it, go and get it, and take it to your uncle and serve it to him.”

The children ran out and helped one another carry the big dish to Raven, and they put it in front of him.

Raven went home full of salmonberries.

When he got home, he just laid around.

And he was just talking about how everything had been....

The children went and took the dish outside.

When they went to look at the dish, it was empty. Aargh!

The children came back and said, “There isn’t anything.”

And then Raven decided to chant again,
“qwulqwul qwuliqw, qwulqwul qwuliqw, qwulqwul qwuliqw, qwulqwul qwuliqw, hwiyu hwesh hwiyu hwesh.

“Go look!”
nem’ lemutum ’i’ ’uwu te’.
They looked and there was nothing.

And Thrush was laughing.
suw’ qwals thu s-hwut, “’aa! nem’ lhu ’u tuni’nulh, shuyulh, nem’ lhu ’u tuni’nulh.”
